“At the time, a major illness can absolutely feel like life-and-death,” explains Noor Ali, M.D., M.P.H., C.P.H. She’s a health care advisor in Tampa, Florida. “But consider first if it really warrants a trip to the ER or if you can seek care at an urgent care facility.”
If your insurance company doesn’t offer virtual options, Dr. Ali suggests looking into a third-party telehealth plan or app. “Consider getting a supplement, just to have the virtual care package,” she said. “They can be less than $100 a month.”
“Most traditional insurance plans have a high deductible, whether that policy is from the marketplace or from the employer,” writes Noor Ali, a health-care advisor and medical doctor, in a blog post accompanying the survey. “You’ll have to pay out of pocket for X amount of dollars before the insurance will pay any benefits.”
