Permanent (whole) life insurance is for permanent expenses. Temporary (term) life insurance is for temporary expenses. If a future expense has an end date (e.g., college tuition, once your children graduate), then you need term life insurance. If that expense will exist no matter when you pass away (e.g., funeral expenses), then you need whole life insurance.

When you buy life insurance, you’re just buying money (conditional money). The only two questions you need to answer are “how much” and “for how long".

Life insurance helps us keep our promises. For example, when a person has children, they incur an obligation to pay for raising them. It may not be legally enforceable like a mortgage, but that doesn’t mean it should be discounted. If the individual is living, their income will help fulfill their obligation. If not, that’s where life insurance can step in and help them keep their promise.
