They are a nice accouterment, which are effectively useless. They also need to have architectural context. I have seen some in older buildings where they look pretty and unobtrusive. I have also seen some on newer buildings where they seem an architectural after thought. Bottom line: They need to seamlessly fit the mold of the space.
