Ryan Metzger, Ridwell’s CEO and Co-founder, has overseen Ridwell since its inception in 2018. At that time, not satisfied with existing options for getting rid of hard-to-recycle items around his home, Ryan and his son Owen started a project in Seattle helping their neighbors see how easy and fun it could be to keep things from landfills. Now, more than 85,000 Ridwell members in six states have saved more than 18 million pounds of stuff. Ryan earned his B.A. and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University and previously held marketing roles at Madrona Venture Group, zulily, and Microsoft.
You may have noticed, but it seems like everyone is starting their spring cleaning early. Could be the start of the new year, or being stuck with cabin fever with the recent snowpocalypse/snowmageddon. Or most likely, people are going full KonMari after watching the Marie Kondo show on Netflix (and stalking their thrift shops waiting for dope stuff their neighbors got rid of to drop).
The Seattle startup Ridwell is building a business around collecting all the old batteries, clamshell containers and lightbulbs that most recycling programs leave behind.
What if instead of focusing on what isn’t working, we looked at these stories as an invitation to do better?
