  • Mastering Rug Sizing: Expert Tips from Art+Loom's Samantha Gallacher
Samantha says, “Rugs are like art, setting the stage for interior design.” Avoid small rugs that divide space. Dining rugs should extend three feet from the table. Living room rugs should extend 8” from furniture. Bedroom rugs should match nightstand width. Consider texture and pile height for room use, and use rugs to add color and personality.
  • Interior Design Dilemma: Sofa or Rug First?
Samantha suggests that while a rug sets the room's tone, its choice should align with the sofa's design. Understanding the sofa's shape and style is key, as the rug and sofa must visually complement each other. "The rug may conceptually come first, but its final selection should be in dialogue with the sofa."
  • Choosing Carpet Colors: Dark vs. Light for Your Space
Samantha advises that carpet color should balance room size, lighting, and function. She notes, "Darker carpets suit large, high-traffic areas," offering contrast and hiding wear. They create coziness but may cramp small spaces. Lighter carpets brighten small rooms and reflect light, ideal for a relaxed vibe. Monochromatic rugs matching walls offer a cohesive look.
