Sarah Onyango comes to PSI from the International Planned Parenthood Federation, where she managed the global technical leadership team. She has significant expertise in sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy and programming, gained through work with international organizations and USAID. She is a medical doctor and holds an MPH from the University of Nairobi and a MA in Health Research from Lancaster University, UK.
Self-managed abortion, which involves taking pills independently with guidance, gives women and girls the opportunity to access services in their privacy and convenience. Evidence shows it’s safe, effective, and empowers women, she said, and doesn’t negate the role of the health system — women still need to be connected to health systems to receive care and support if needed.
Including abortion in universal health coverage was one of the main messages emerging from the Women Deliver conference this week in Kigali, Rwanda.
