With the average wedding costing more than £20,000, couples want the day to be perfect. I asked wedding planners what mistakes to avoid

Dutta adds: “While it’s natural to focus on creating a memorable experience for the couple, it’s essential that they don’t overlook the comfort and enjoyment of guests. Is it convenient to have the reception hall an hour away from the ceremony hall? No. Should guests be in a shaded area if it’s June and the wedding is outside? Probably.”
Although some couples will fall in love with the trends, Dutta warns couples not to follow them as they could be left bitterly disappointed. “When couples, especially brides, attend multiple weddings they get an idea of things they want. Unfortunately for many those things tend to be far beyond budget limits. Trying to keep up with the latest trends, especially the costly ones, is unnecessary.”
Although many people can accommodate a big budget, and save for many years to do so, they can still set an amount that’s too low, says planner Sasha Dutta, from Fierce Events. “Weddings are very expensive and they have gotten even more so since the pandemic. By not establishing a realistic budget from the outset, couples are financially strained after the wedding.”
Dutta always recommends to clients that they have wiggle room in their budgets as they often end up spending more than they planned.
