Dr. Shawn Kavoussi is a Retinal Surgeon and Ophthalmologist. He is the founder and president of the Texas Retina Center in the Texas Medical Center.

Having spent the better part of the last two decades in Houston, Dr. Kavoussi received his Bachelor’s from Rice University where he was one of only 15 students selected to the Rice-Baylor Medical Scholars program. He then earned his Doctorate of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital System.

Following residency, Dr. Kavoussi returned to Houston where he completed a two-year vitreo-retinal surgery fellowship with one of the highest surgical volumes of any retinal training program in the country.

In addition to being highly skilled in the most advanced retina surgical techniques, Dr. Kavoussi has served as an investigator in industry-sponsored clinical trials and has published extensively in the peer-reviewed ophthalmic literature.

He is principal investigator in such trials as the implantable miniature telescope for advanced macular degeneration, for which he performed the first implant in Texas. He is also pioneering new modalities of imaging and removing symptomatic eye floaters using infra-red video and sutureless 27-gauge surgery. He has presented his research at meetings both at the state and national levels.

He currently serves on the Board of Scientific Advisory Trustees for the Retina Research Foundation, as well as the annual grants review committee responsible for allocating donated funds to scientists and researchers across the globe investigating the next generation of treatments for blinding retinal diseases.
