Sungdai Cho is a director for the Center for Korean Studies; professor of Korean and linguistics; and graduate director in the Asian and Asian American Studies Department, within the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University.

Cho's research interests include syntax and morphology, and Korean language pedagogy. In regards to theoretical linguistics, Cho is mostly interested in causative, passive constructions, honorific expressions in Korean, and how they are placed in the Northeast linguistic area. In regards to language pedagogy, Cho's interests include the National Standards for Learning Languages, and assessment.

After receiving his doctorate in Linguistics from the University of Hawaii, Cho joined Binghamton University in 2000, where he has been the founding director of the Center for Korean Studies, since 2008. He also taught for seven years at the following universities: University of Michigan, Indiana University, and Stanford University.

Cho has published eleven books, including four language textbooks (University of Hawaii Press); three edited books (Cambridge University Press and Korea University Press); and four books on Korean linguistics and language pedagogy (Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Scholars Publishing). Three books are currently under contract: "Korean Syntax" (Cambridge University Press, 2024); "Korean Pedagogy" (Routledge Publication, 2024) and "The Comparative Syntax of Korean and Japanese" (Oxford University Press, 2024).

Sungdai Cho was the former chair of the Korean Special Interest Group (SIG) at American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); co-chair of the “National Standards for Learning Korean” task force; and he was associated with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); and SAT Korean chair in Educational Testing Service by the College Board, for the past ten years. He has frequently organized conferences for Foreign Language Pedagogy and Korean Linguistics. In addition, Cho has hosted the 2008 "American Association of Teachers of Korean" (AATK), and the 2008 International Circle of Korean Linguistics (ICKL) conferences, at Binghamton University.

Cho also hosted the 2018 workshop on “Korean at the Nexus of Northeast Linguistic Area I," held at Seoul National University; the 2021 workshop on "Korean Linguistics in Crosslinguistic Context,” at Cornell University; the 2024 workshop on "Culture Learning," at MIT; and the 2025 "Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference," at Cornell University.
