Thomas Crowell is an attorney and author with a rich background in both the legal and creative industries. His career began in science journalism, which laid the foundation for his transition into law. As an author, Thomas has written several books, including “The Pocket Lawyer for Comic Book Creators,” which is recognized as the first dedicated legal guide for the comic book industry. His other notable work, “The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers,” is a best-selling legal guide for independent film and television producers.

In the academic realm, Thomas has made significant contributions as a law school educator. He co-created and served as the Director from Practice emeritus of the Indie Film Clinic at Cardozo Law School. His clinical experience extends to his role as the Executive Director emeritus of the New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, where he provided pro bono legal services to artists. Beyond writing, Thomas is actively involved in international education, teaching intellectual property and media law to a global audience. His collaborative work with the former president of the Dominican Republic to introduce entertainment law training in the country has had a lasting impact on its creative sectors.

Thomas’s current research delves into the complex relationship between copyright and artificial intelligence within the creative industries. This work is at the forefront of legal scholarship as the industry navigates the evolving landscape of AI-generated content and its implications for copyright law.

His commitment to education is further exemplified by his Continuing Legal Education (CLE) lectures at New York Comic Con, where he educates attendees on the legal aspects of the comic book industry. Thomas’s multifaceted career showcases his dedication to supporting and educating creators in protecting their intellectual property rights.
