On becoming a Dermatologist…
I decided to become a dermatologist for many reasons. My dad (Dr. Norman Minars) never pushed me in that direction – he let me come to it on my own. I originally thought about being a surgeon (like every med student) or an ICU doctor (I liked the science of the ICU) but dermatology fit my personality best. In a single clinic day, one can see infants to 90 years old, be challenged to diagnose a mysterious rash, and perform simple surgeries. I also like that most of the things we diagnose are not serious or life-threatening and are very amenable to simple treatments. I like being able to say “It's only’ a skin cancer. We can treat it with a simple in-office procedure and it will have no effect on your health otherwise.”

  • "Anti-fungal sprays are a topical medication, meaning they are applied directly to the skin. They're used to treat athlete's foot and other common fungal infections. Typically, anti-fungal sprays contain active ingredients like miconazole nitrate or tolnaftate, and many are available without a prescription.
Aside from sprays, anti-fungal medications come in other forms, such as creams, powders, and pills. "Each vehicle has its own pros and cons, but sometimes it is honestly just preference,"

  • “The anti-yeast ingredient in many dandruff shampoos can be effective at preventing Tinea Versicolor, so I will often recommend Nizoral 1% ($15) shampoo or Selenium Sulfide Shampoo to be used as a preventive body wash daily or a few times a week in these patients,”

  • "UPF is a rating that's used to measure the amount of UVA (Ultraviolet A) and UVB radiation that comes from the sun and is able to penetrate a person's clothing and reach their skin.” So a higher UPF rating means an article of clothing is more protective against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays"
