Virginia is the President and CEO at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She is committed to ensuring the blind and visually impaired, low vision seniors and financially disadvantaged schoolchildren without resources for eye care, regardless of age, socio-economic status or ethnicity, have equitable access to education, blindness prevention programs, and vision rehabilitation training.
The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired recently announced the first collaboration between educators, medical professionals, researchers, and service providers in the State of Florida, responding exclusively to Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).
By shining a spotlight on this condition and being the first in Florida to open a statewide CVI Center, the Miami Lighthouse hopes to set an example—and a blueprint—for others looking to make an impact on CVI. What is special about this collaboration is that it bridges across professions to create a seamless, holistic treatment plan for kids, from medical diagnosis to vision assessment to educational intervention. In addition, because of our experts, children with CVI at the Miami Lighthouse can utilize multi-sensory learning. They are using their vision to access materials adapted to build literacy and math skills, engage socially with their peers, and reach their full potential when given the opportunity.
