Reporter on DEI and Anti-Racism

New Posted 18 October 2023 | Ottawa, Ontario | Future of Good

Future of Good seeks a full-time journalist to cover anti-racism and inclusion work in communities and social purpose organizations across Canada, supported by World Education Services Miriam Assefa Fund. Canada and countries worldwide are in the grips of a diversity, equity and inclusion crisis that ruins collective well-being and communities, threatens dignity — and lives — and hurts livelihoods. This is a worldwide emergency, and there is an urgent need to highlight insights, analysis, perspectives and solutions about this topic to mitigate long-lasting intergenerational effects in communities. Colonial, racist and exclusionary approaches to workforce growth, pandemic response, and community rebuilding have also disproportionately affected racialized women, children, youth, seniors, people with disabilities, newcomer communities and Indigenous peoples. Working as part of the Future of Good editorial team, the fellow listens to, writes about, and engages with grassroots groups, families, activists, small businesses, non-profit professionals, frontline workers, philanthropic leaders, impact investors, public servants, and corporate citizenship leaders across Canada to consider the inequities amplified, how inclusion and anti-racism initiatives in mainstream organizations as well as in communities are progressing. The fellow also uncovers weak points in the inclusion ecosystem — areas where more support from the social impact world is needed to close the gaps for Black, Indigenous and people of colour. The stories center the voices and lived experiences of Black, Indigenous and people of colour in a decolonized journalistic way.

About working with Future of Good
Future of Good is a new organization; however, we strive to be a new type of organization. Benefits, wellness days and development opportunities are rare in many social purpose organizations, but we believe they are essential. Our values are artistic, brave, curious, humble, inclusive and respectful.

Wellness matters
At Future of Good, wellness is central to our cultural DNA. All Future of Good staff have five weeks of paid vacation, unlimited health days, Fridays off in the summer, and a comprehensive benefits package. Everybody talks about how good paid vacation is in Europe, so we looked it up and matched it.

Learning and growth matters
We believe that continuous learning and unlearning help us realize our collective potential. All Future of Good staff get paid time off and technology and professional development funds to fuel their creativity, learning and growth. Attend a course, upgrade your laptop, sign up for a conference or learn new software.

Pay transparency matters
All pay ranges at Future of Good are made public in postings. To go even further, all interview candidates are compensated for their interview time, and the ratio between the lowest-paid full-time employee and highest-paid full-time employee is no more than 3:1. So if the top must rise, then the bottom must rise too.

Responsibilities:
Working as part of the Future of Good editorial team, the editorial fellow on DEI and anti-racism will be part of Future of Good’s 12-month digital content residency. At Future of Good, our core focus is solutions journalism. The fellow is a dedicated journalist covering a range of perspectives, stories, and angles that offer insights and analysis on the solutions, research and lived experiences of the cascading and intersectional effects of systemic racism in communities across Canada and, turn, how inclusion and anti-racism programs and initiatives are responding, performing and evolving.

The fellow writes stories published on and distributed by Future of Good, using a mix of formats such as feature stories, Q&A, profiles, data stories, explainers and more. The stories would incorporate and include a range of local, regional, and national social purpose organizations and anti-racism initiatives, including international examples where applicable. The stories could cover themes including, but not limited to:

Highlighting initiatives and advocacy efforts working to make Canada’s social safety net anti-racist and inclusive
Highlighting creative community-based initiatives and solutions to combating systemic anti-Black, anti-Asian and anti-Indigenous racism, Islamophobia, and more
Highlighting how the composition of non-profit governance boards is evolving, what the progress has been, and who has made significant changes, there are still gaps
Covering JEDI internal transformation work in some of Canada’s largest community services organizations and philanthropies
Understanding and valuing the caring economy, including initiatives offering support for its workforce, which is primarily made up of women of colour
Disaggregated data as the starting point toward policies that support inclusive communities
Highlighting Black and Indigenous anti-racist approaches to community programs, philanthropy and giving, social finance, social services delivery, advocacy and activism, and more social change work
Supporting Black, Indigenous and people of colour entrepreneurs — mainly local, small business entrepreneurship
A JEDI analysis of governments’ pandemic rebuilding and recovery interventions
A JEDI and social determinants of health-focused analysis of social challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, such as housing insecurity and food insecurity

These themes are proposed based on Future of Good’s scanning, research, and engagement thus far. However, the fellow would pay close attention to new developments, under-the-radar conversations, ideas, and underrepresented voices in the inclusion, equity, human rights, and anti-racism spaces.

Expectations:

Pitch three to five feature stories per month
Report and write timely news, profile and feature stories as assigned by the managing editor with an eye on solutions journalism
Occasionally moderate conference calls, interviews or panels on the topic with readers
Meet with our partnerships manager and the fellowships funder occasionally to brainstorm ideas.

Type: Full-time, permanent position, 37.5 hours a week

Location: Anywhere, but must have a valid SIN (be able to legally work in Canada and be paid in Canadian dollars)

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $50,000-60,000. Our comprehensive benefits package includes includes: five weeks of paid vacation; unlimited health days; Fridays off in summer; and plenty of professional development and mentorship opportunities.
