The San Francisco Standard (sfstandard.com) is expanding its newsroom and is on the hunt for a passionate and seasoned Tech Culture Reporter. As a full-time member of our team, you will be at the forefront of covering the intersection of technology, innovation and the early-adopting culture that defines the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are seeking an individual with a deep understanding of the tech industry and its geographic and spiritual center. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for compelling narratives, digital trends and the personalities shaping the industry.
All of this should be combined with an appreciation for the cultural nuances that make the Bay Area a petri dish of both inspiring and terrible ideas about the future. Strong opinions about the Vision Pro, the All-In Podcast and the Blueprint Diet are not only welcomed but required.
Responsibilities:
In-depth daily reporting: Uncover the juiciest stories at the crossroads of tech and culture, digging into the quirks, trends and personalities that define the Bay Area tech scene.
Feature writing: Craft stories that go beyond the surface, exploring the human side of tech, its societal impact, its material obsessions and the vibe shifts shaping the industry.
Event coverage: Be our eyes and ears at major tech events, conferences and random hacker house parties. Your travels will be the talk of the Valley.
Source building: Build a tribe of tech leaders, startup rockstars and community influencers.
Newsroom collaboration: Team up with editors, photographers, videographers and other talented journalists to turn your stories into captivating experiences—think videos, podcasts and interactive story formats.
Requirements:
4+ years of news reporting, especially covering the tech beat.
You breathe tech, with a focus on the Bay Area's major companies and leaders.
Exceptional writing and storytelling abilities, showcasing a knack for translating complex tech topics into engaging narratives.
Proven ability to build and maintain a network of sources within the tech community. Bonus if you know them IRL, not just on LinkedIn.
Proficiency in digital content management systems, social media and an understanding of multimedia storytelling.
Fast-paced news startup? No problem. You thrive on the adrenaline of breaking stories.
Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
This is an in-person role based in San Francisco, and occasional evening or weekend work may be required. We offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, and at least five work samples, including examples of impactful tech culture reporting. Share insights into the challenges you encountered, and any real-world impact resulting from your journalism.
The pay range for this role is $75,000 to $140,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors unique to each candidate. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t fit all the preferred qualifications of the job.
